Fundamental Differences Between Sun and Moon Signs

    12 Constellations Around Earth

Astrology whether western or Vedic cannot work without sun and moon signs. But there is a major structural difference between the two because of the sign they follow. Western astrology follows the sun sign while Vedic astrology applies the moon sign. Hence, there will be a considerable amount of varsity in the interpretations of the two most widely known astrological formats. Let’s understand why.

    What is Moon Sign?

    Pagan Moon Signs

Moon sign is the constellation on which the moon was shining the most at the time of your birth. For example, Gemini will be your moon sign if the moon was in the Gemini constellation when you were touching the surface of the earth. The moon sign gives an insight into an individual’s mental construction. It highlights your emotions and feelings. Moon sign changes every two and a half-day because the moon is also changing its positions while orbiting around the earth. Hence every two and a half, it is in a different zodiac sign. Though, Vedic astrology follows moon sign it does not make future interpretations merely on the basis of it, unlike western astrology, it studies planetary aspects and conjunctions as well as degrees of the moon for best results. Moon also represents mother so the moon’s placement can tell a lot about your relationship with your mother.

    What Are Sun Signs?

Sun sign refers to the zodiac sign that the sun was standing at the time of your birth. There are 12 constellations forming a band around the earth. The one sign on which the sun was directly shining at the time of your birth becomes your zodiac or sun sign. It changes every 30 days. Each sun sign is further ruled by a planet, which influences your personality and traits. For example, Virgo and Gemini are ruled by Mercury and are known for their intellect, curiosity and analytical properties. Aries is governed by Mars is attracted to challenge and excitement.

Differences Between Moon And Sun Sign

There are instances when a Gemini person never feels connected to the sign of the twins. Instead, they are emotional, family-oriented and get irritated at the drop of a hat when they become moody, like a Cancer moon. You can be born as an inward, mysterious Scorpio but fall in love with adventure, spontaneity, being blunt and calling a spade a spade. In short, have more Aries moon in you than Scorpio sun sign.

Who Are You According To Sun And Moon Signs?

The basic reason for this is that there is a wide difference between sun and moon signs. Firstly, the sun takes care of your basic personality, character, ego, and will. It gives the knowledge of your identity. While, the moon governs your subconscious, emotions and instinctive responses to the world around us.

Secondly, you can know your sun sign if you know your date of birth, while for the moon sign you need your date, year, time and place of birth.

Thirdly, the sun takes 12 months to cover all 12-star signs, therefore astrological predictions are valid for one month. On the other hand, the moon moves quicker and stays in a sign for only 2 and a half days.

Fourthly, the sun sign provides you a general overview of a person, whereas the moon sign gives you detailed information on your inner workings and untapped potential.

    Further Reasons

Moon Signs Gives A Complete Picture

Fifthly, an astrologer’s help would be pertinent for knowing your moon sign. The amount of details you need to have and calculation on that basis is possible only through expert help. While finding your sun sign is the easiest task on the earth. You match your birth date with the period each zodiac sign covers and know your sun sign.

Sixthly, western astrology considers the sun sign while Hindu Vedic astrology follows the moon sign.

Seventhly, your feelings, and emotions are controlled by the moon, hence sun sign alone cannot give a complete picture of yourself. If you don’t know your moon sign, you will lose a big chunk of information which answers ‘why you are, what you are?’.

Ninthly, the moon does not stay in a zodiac sign for a fixed period of time. While, while the sun stays in a zodiac for a 30 day period.

    In Conclusion

However, it is best to see a person through both sun and moon signs because that will give the most clear knowledge of the person. For example, revolutionary and erratic Aquarians can become spiritual and submissive under a Scorpian moon. Taurus, a pleasure-loving, dependable sign can show traits of discipline, willpower, and structure, if it has Capricorn moon.

    The Rashis And Careers

    Aries, Taurus and Gemini

In the same way that houses indicate careers, the Rashis also add their indications to a career reading. The fiery and passionate sign of Aries (Mesha) points to careers in the armed forces, police, athletics, industries, security companies, boxing, wrestling, mechanical engineering and iron and steelwork. The Venusian sign of Taurus (Rishaba) fosters careers in jewellery, luxury items, fashion, music, dance, performing arts, perfume, cosmetics, banking, tailoring, automotive (especially high end and luxury cars) as well as real estate. The Rashi of Gemini (Mithuna) indicates Mercury related careers such as writing, journalism, trade, healing, sales, diplomacy, personal assistants, stenographers, linguistics, bookkeepers as well as law.

The Moon-ruled Cancer (Kartaka) Rashi indicates careers in water-related fields. Libra (Tula) makes excellent judges, beauty industry personnel, models, fashion designers as well as air hostesses and receptionists. Scorpio (Vrischik) makes careers in the navy, medicine, doctors, police, the army as well as liquids and drugs as well as chemicals.

Pisces (Meena) indicates oil, chemicals, perfume, navy, sailors, surgeons, doctors, jailors, secret services, hospitals and prisons.

    Analysing Profession In The Chart

The tenth house of the birth chart is the primary house of profession. The Dashamsha is the divisional chart that is studied for career-related matters. One must check the Lagna lord of the Dashamsha. Then one studies the lord of the Navamsha Rashi that the 10th lord is placed in. Of them, the strongest planet shows a clear indication of career. Jaimini astrologers also study the sign in which the Atmakaraka is placed in the Navamsa. If this is the Sun it indicates government or public sector job. Moon indicates teaching, Mars army, police or electrical, Mercury politics, business or social services. Jupiter or Saturn indicate the same profession as the father, Venus is a politician.

The Varga Chart – Dashamsha Or D10

The Dashamsha chart is the varga that is formed by dividing all the Rashis into tenths, i.e., the 30 degrees of a Rashi into 3-degree sections. It is the most important divisional chart for career and profession. It also shows the impact that the person will make on society at large. Every indication that is seen in the birth chart has to be confirmed in the Navamsa and the Dashamsha. An inclination toward a particular profession must be confirmed only after seeing patterns repeat in all the aspects that are being studied. Merely one placement should not be used to give a definitive conclusion. The tenth house of the D10 is a good indicator of a person’s profession. The Lagna of the D10 is also studied for auspiciousness. The signification of the Dashamsha is very similar to the 10th house of the birth chart.

    D10 Lagna

The Rashi in which the Lagna of the Dashamsha falls is important. If the D10 Lagna falls in a Dusthana the Dashamsha will not play too much of a part in the profession of the person. If the Lagna of the D10 is strong we can take the indications of the D10 as significant. The next step is to study the lord of the 10th house of D1 and where it falls in the D10 as well as where the lord of the 10th house in the D10 falls. Planets that influence these houses by placement or aspect add flavour to the profession indication. Repeated patterns that keep confirming one indication add more and more emphasis.

In the same way, an astrologer also studies the placement of the Lagnesh of the D10, the planets that are in it as well as the planets that are aspecting it. As in any chart, the planets in Kendras and Trikonas are more auspicious than those in or associated with the Dusthanas. Planets that are aspected by or placed with the Lagnesh of the D10 are good for the person’s profession.

    Additional Career And Profession Indicators

The number of career options that are available to a person is expanding exponentially. The astrologer must use the significations of the planets, houses and Rashis together and intelligently relate them to modern concepts of different careers. For example, the classical texts do not define a career in cinema or journalism. The astrologer intelligently relates the classical definitions of the basics of professions to modern ways of working and earning a living. Some examples of careers and their planets described below will help understand how the significations of the planets relate to each profession.

    Communication, Aviation And Metallurgy

The Air signs of Gemini, Libra and Aquarius when prominent indicate a career in aviation. Careers in communication are closely linked to Gemini and the planet Mercury. Mars as well as the Mars-ruled Aries and Scorpio are engineering planets. The process of extracting metals and ores from the ground are Saturn ruled. Metallurgy is ruled by the Sun, Mercury and Mars.

    Aviation: Vedic Astrology Career Analysis

    The Navy And Marine Careers

Since the Navy and sailing are to do with oceans as well as long journeys, the signs of Sagittarius, Scorpio and Pisces are prominent in sailor’s charts. Moon and Venus are also watery planets and influence careers that have to do with the ocean. However, the engineering aspect of ship design and building and other marine engineering careers link to Mars and Mercury. Virgo with such combinations suggests the merchant navy and other commercial and trade aspects of shipping.

    Landscape And Gardens

Those in the profession of landscape design and other plant-related jobs have the involvement of Mercury as well as the 4th house. Venus could enhance the ornamental aspect of the job. When the person does garden and forest-related work while also owning extensive land for it, Mars the significator of land is the indicator.

Garden And Landscape Design: Vedic Astrology Career Analysis

Careers In Writing, Art And Drama

Mercury is a major planet of writing, journalism, reporting and writing. To be an editor, Jupiter must also be involved. Mercury controls drawing and Venus artistic inclination. Venus and Rahu are the main planets for the fields of theatre and cinema. Rahu rules anything that is filmed or is an illusion such as photography and movies. The Sun and Jupiter control the traditional methods of photography that require the use of chemicals for development.

Venus And Rahu Love The Attention And Glamour: Vedic Astrology Career Analysis

Mars Careers In Electricity, Real Estate, Arms And Ammunition

Mars signifies land holdings and directly relates to real estate careers. It is a warrior planet and signifies career paths in arms and ammunition. Mars is also a significator of electricity. While Aries (Mesha) is electricity, Scorpio (Vrischik) is a water sign of Mars and signifies hydroelectricity.

Career And Gain: The 9th Lord Or 11th Lord In The 10th House

The placement of either the 9th lord of fortune or the 11th lord of gain in the 10th house of career is a very auspicious placement. The 9th lord in the 10th that makes an association of the Kendra and Trikona is a Raj Yoga. The 11th lord of gain in the 10th house of profession is also a very beneficial placement that shows great gain, growth and authority in career

So, in a similar fashion one can effectively read a birth chart and assess the career options available to the person using the basic significations of the Rashis and planets.

Mars in the 7th house makes the person very passionate and impatient in sex. Saturn has the opposite effect. Sun can bring too much ego into the bedroom. Jupiter makes for a passionate person without any extreme aspects. Rahu, on the other hand, amplifies the desire but is less straightforward. Ketu in the 7th gives sexual problems or disinterest. When the 8th house lord is the Moon, the organs will be normal but the person will be very changeable and moody in sexual affairs. 8th lord Jupiter gives normal organs and function. Sun gives good size and performance. Venus gives normal or better organs and great delight in the sexual act. Saturn makes the organ bigger but negatively affects performance. Mars amplifies the desire but reduces the size. When the 8th lord is Mercury, there is an inferiority complex with regard to the sexual organ and performance.

Balance Is The Key To Satisfaction

    12th House

The 12th house is the house of bed pleasures and also isolation. Things in the 12th house get hidden. So, if any of the combinations that indicate over-sexuality or affairs is in the 12th house, they will be hidden. The 7th lord in the 12th house gives the person an overt interest in sex. If the lords are interchanged it enhances the effect with very negative consequences.

    The Planets

The main planets that govern the person’s romantic or sexual inclinations are Mars and Venus. Venus is romantic desires while Mars is passion. If these two planets influence each other in the chart the person’s sex drive will be higher than average.

Rahu is obsessive and insatiable. Rahu’s influence on the 7th, 8th or 12th houses or on Mars and Venus amplifies desire in a big way. Ketu detaches and will have a nullifying effect on desire.

    Male Planets

The planets are also assigned genders and many personal characteristics as per Vedic astrology. The masculine planets are Jupiter, Sun and Mars. Jupiter is the wise male. Sun is a mature and rather self-centred male. Mars is the aggressive, passionate and fiery male in his prime.

    Female Planets

The Moon and Venus are the feminine romantic planets. Rahu is also feminine but a very fiery, unconventional and overly aggressive passionate female.

    Third Gender

Saturn, Mercury and Ketu do not fall in either the male or female categories and are classified as neutral. Saturn is an aged male and therefore sexually incapable. Mercury is so dual and gender-fluid that he is neutral sexually. Some look at Mercury as a sexually immature adolescent. Ketu as mentioned earlier causes detachment. In the extreme Ketu can even cause celibacy or asexuality.

Sun And Jupiter – Well Balanced

So, we see how each of the planets brings influence to sexuality. When the Sun influences the houses or planets of sexuality there will be a positive influence as well as arrogance and domination in sexual relationships. Jupiter’s influence brings self-control and subdues any excessive or unnatural wants in sexuality. Jupiter, however, does not spoil the sexual appetite but keeps it within the boundaries of conventionality.

    Mars – Passion

Mars is the very passionate influence that in certain places in the horoscope causes Mangal Dosh. this just means that the person is very passionate in the areas that Mars influences and should be ideally matched with a partner who has the capability to match the passion.

How Do You Feel About Sex? Let Your Birthchart Give You Clues

    Venus – Romance

Venus is desire. When placed in houses of desire the desire for sexual union and romance is more than average. Mars’ influence on Venus can send this desire to an even higher level. Generally, Mars and Venus influence to each other results in a person who the average person classifies as ‘oversexed’.

    Mercury – Fun

Mercury with another neutral or malefic influence could make the person less sexual. But an unafflicted Mercury brings a lot of playfulness and fun into the sexual relationship. The person would be very interested in being creative and trying new things. The changeable nature of Mercury, however, might give the tendency to want more than one partner.

    Rahu – No Limits

Rahu brings excessiveness into the bedroom. There is too much obsessive desire. Rahu is also the significator of things out of the ordinary. So a person with Rahu influence on the planets and houses of desire makes the person interested in trying things that are ‘kinky’ or out of the way. If the partner is well matched this would make for extremely passionate sexual encounters. But Rahu’s tendency to never be satisfied could lead to the person wanting more than it is possible for a partner to give. Rahu can be sly or indirect in the approach though Rahu in the act itself is anything but shy.

    Rahu – Insatiable

    Saturn – Speed Breaker

Saturn is the wet blanket on sexual desire. The planet makes sex rather dutiful and normal. When other neutral planets influence Saturn it could mean sexual insufficiency. When there is a combination that indicates a high sex drive Saturn’s involvement as a malefic can make it more so.

Some Combinations That Cause A High Sex Drive

We saw that Venus, Mars and the 7th lord are the most common causes of a high sex drive. Here are some likely combinations that help one understand how the connections and placements of these planets affect the sex drive:

When there is an affliction to the 7th house as well as an affliction to the 12th house of bed pleasures
Mars conjoined with Venus and afflicted
Saturn with Mars and Moon in the 7th house
Mars and Venus exchanging signs and at the same time in a Navamsa of Saturn or in interchanged Navamsas
Venus in the 7th house and afflicted
Venus in the Navamsa of Mars or Saturn
Lord of the 1st house with the lord of the 6th and afflicted
7th lord in Lagna and weak Moon in 7th house with both the Lagna and the 7th house under affliction or malefic influence
Venus in a Rashi owned by Mercury (Mithuna or Kanya) and aspected by Mars
7th lord, 7th house and Venus under Mars influence
Parivartana or exchange between the 7th and 12th house lords
The 7th house with Venus, Mars and Mercury
Mercury with Venus in the 7th house
The 7th lord placed with the 6th lord

Venus And Mars – Too Much To Handle

    Very Low Sex Drive

The neutral or third gender planets when aspecting or combined with Mars and Venus cause higher sex drive. But when there is more emphasis or connection of these planets with each other or the respective houses it has the opposite effect of lowering the libido. Some examples are:

Saturn and Moon conjunction in the 4th or 10th house from Mars
When the lord of the 1st house is Saturn (Makara or Kumbha Lagna) and is aspected by Ketu or Mars
Both Saturn and the 1st house lord aspected by both Mars and Ketu
Saturn with either Rahu or Ketu in the 8th house
Rahu and Saturn in the 1st house or with the Moon
    Navamsa

Merely the presence of certain positions of planets in a chart cannot lead to a definite conclusion. The indications of the planets should also be checked and confirmed in the Navamsa chart. Most people with high or low sex drives have good relationships and marriage despite the variations in desire. When the horoscopes of the couple are well balanced and matched they derive satisfaction regardless. However, when there is no supporting factor for relationships, a low or high sex drive can be the cause of relationship issues.

When there are supportive planets for fertility and children, this is not an issue. Otherwise low sex drive and a troubles 5th house of children can cause fertility issues. When the Lagna, 5th and 9th houses (that control judgement) are strong, even a high sex drive will not impact fidelity. But if the person’s ability to stick to the conventions is impaired and infidelity or promiscuity result.

    The Sun-Ruled Nakshatras

Just as the Rashis have lords, the 27 Nakshatras also have lords assigned to them. The characteristics of the Nakshatra correspond not only to their Rashi lord but also to their Nakshatra lords.
The 12 astrological signs or Rashis are the divisions of the 360 degrees of the zodiac into 12 equal sections of 30 degrees each. These Rashis are assigned lord who are either the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn. The nodes Rahu and Ketu are also mentioned as co-lords of certain Rashis in some texts.
    360 Degrees Divided Into 12 Rashis/Signs
Nakshatras are the division of the 360 degrees of the zodiac into 27 equal sections. Each of these sections is associated with a star or a group of stars. Nakshatra translates as ‘that which doesn’t move’. However, the most commonly used term for Nakshatras is ‘lunar mansions’. The interpretation of the Nakshatras also adds a layer of detail to the reading of a horoscope in Vedic astrology.
    Nakshatras And Nakshatra Lords
The division of 360 degrees into 27 sections makes each section 13 degrees and 20 minutes of a Nakshatras. Each Nakshatra has a lord. However, Nakshatra lords include the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu. The order of the lord assignment is the very same as the Dasha order in the Vimshottari Dasha system; Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn as well as Mercury. This Dasha system depends on the Nakshatra in which the Moon is placed in a birth chart. Therefore, the first Dasha in the Vimshottari Dasha system is the Dasha of the Moon Nakshatra lord. Vedic astrology also studies the Nakshatra and the Nakshatra lord of each planet placement for a detailed reading.
    Nakshatra Padas
Each Nakshatra is divided into four Padas that are 3 degrees and 20 minutes each. These Padas may fall in different Rashis for certain Nakshatras. So, the Nakshatra lord for all the four Padas of a Nakshatra will be the same. However, different Padas might have different Rashi lords. Both the Rashi and the Nakshatra lordships play a very important role in the interpretation of the horoscope.

So, of the 27 Nakshatras, the Sun-ruled Nakshatras are Krittika, Uttaraphalguni and Uttarashda. These Nakshatras have Padas that fall across Rashi borders. So, even though the Nakshatra itself comes under the influence of the Nakshatra lord, Sun, the Rashi lord for the first Pada of Krittika, Uttaraphalguni and Uttarashada is different from the Rashi lord of the second, third and fourth Padas.
    Krittika – The Cutter
Krittika is the Nakshatra that spans 26 degrees 40 minutes Aries to 10 degrees Taurus. The word Krittika means to cut. It is the star of cutting and also of fire. It is located in a group of six stars that are astronomically known as the Pleiades. Krittika is also symbolised by a sharp object or a knife. Agni, the God of sacred fire is the deity of Krittika. This adds the signification of the power to burn (Dahana Shakti) to this Nakshatra. This burning could be for purification and also for cooking and nourishment. So, this is the Nakshatra that has the power to burn or cut away that which is not necessary and thus purify. This gives the ability to discern as well as great powers of perception. Moreover, just like a fire that burns out of control, this Nakshatra has a problem with an uncontrollable appetite.

    Krittika – Fire
The first Pada of Krittika is in Mesha/Aries and this section of the Nakshatra is under the influence of both the Sun as well as Mars (lord of Aries). This gives a fiery and bold leadership influence to this Pada. The second, third and fourth Padas are in Rishaba/Taurus and have a more Venusian influence that is softer than the first Pada. Hence, these three Padas have a great appreciation for beauty and the fine arts.
The Sun influence gives qualities of leadership and independence to this Nakshatra. They are able to get to the heart of the matter, have a strong desire for change and are also very straightforward. On the negative side, there may be issues with controlling the appetite, illicit relationships, over aggression and temper issues.
    Murugan – Krittikas
According to the legend of the birth of Lord Muruga/Kartikeya, he was raised by the six Krittika stars. This also symbolises the nurturing quality of this Nakshatra that is not immediately obvious because of the rather harsh first impression. It may also imply illegitimate or adopted children. Krittika is also called Karthigai in Tamil and Malayalam.
    Lord Murugan
    • Deity: Agni
    • Rashi Degrees: 26 degrees 40 minutes Aries to 10 degrees Taurus

    • Symbol: Razor, flame
    • Good For: Cutting oneself away from bad habits, cleaning/organising, debate, argument, cutting, shaving, sewing, cooking, fasting and for a protest.
    • Not Good For: pleasurable and relaxing activities
    • Dosha: Kapha
    • Guna: Kama
    • Motivation: Rajas
    • Direction: South-East
Uttaraphalguni – Fig Tree Or The Latter Reddish One
This is the twelfth Nakshatra that is partly in the Rashi of Simha/Leo and Kanya/Virgo. This Nakshatra spans the Simha/Leo and Kanya/Virgo Rashis. It is located at the stars Denebola (Beta-Leonis) and 93-Leonis. The symbol of this Nakshatra is the back legs of a bed which indicates rest and pleasure. This Nakshatra is also called Uthiram in Tamil and Malayalam.
The power of this Nakshatra is to gain power through partnership or marriage (Chayani Shakti). The previous Nakshatra of Purvaphalguni signifies the marriage or union. This Nakshatra of Uttaraphalguni is described as the setting up of the new couples’ household or the marriage bed which is after the marriage ceremony. The deity of this Nakshatra is Bhaga. He is associated with friendship, favours, kindness, inheritance, contracts and unions as well as prosperity through unions. So, on one level this Nakshatra could indicate gain through inheritance and on the other hand gain through marriage.
    Weakness
Lord Shiva and Shakti married under this Nakshatra. This is therefore an added symbolism of how important family and marriage is to this Nakshatra. This Nakshatra gives great love as well as a protective nature towards animals. They also have a tendency towards social work and helping others. This Nakshatra tends to be over-dependent on partnerships and relationships. They tend to feel very lonely or incomplete when single. They tend to give too much in a relationship while at the same time being ungrateful to their partners and those who lend them a helping hand.
The first Pada of Uttaraphalguni is in Simha. It is influenced by the Sun as both the Nakshatra as well as the Rashi lord. All Uttaraphalguni natives have strong leadership qualities but the first Pada shows a very determined person who is able to overcome any obstacle in their way. The second, third as well as the fourth Padas are under the influence of the Sun as the Nakshatra lord and Mercury as the Rashi lord making them more detail-oriented and interested in research.
    • Deity: Bhaga
    • Rashi Degrees: 26 degrees 40 minutes Leo to 10 degrees Virgo
    • Animal Symbol: Male Cow
    • Nature: Manushya (human)
    • Power: to gain power through partnership or marriage (Chayani Shakti)
    • Symbol: Back legs of a bed or cot
    • Good For: Since this is a fixed Nakshatra it is good for anything that is meant to be permanent. Marriage laying foundations, starting good deeds, planting, sowing, purchase of land, sex, wearing new garments and jewels.
    • Not Good For: Harsh and destructive acts, lending money, trying to end or complete something.
    • Dosha: Vata
    • Guna: Moksha
    • Motivation: Rajas
    • Direction: East
Uttarashada – Final Victory/ Universal Star
Uttarashada is the 21st Nakshatra and is called “The Later Unconquered One”. Purvashada and Uttarashada are a pair of Nakshatras. Uttarashada translates as the latter or the final victory. It is symbolised by the planks of a bed and also the tusk of the elephant. We can link this to the times when elephants were used in wars and how efficiently the elephant used its tusks to defeat the opposition in a fight. It is also a Nakshatra that symbolises royalty and leadership. With Sun being the Nakshatra lord it is clear to see why this Nakshatra has such good leadership skills and since they connect with people easily, they make good politicians too. This Nakshatra is also called Uthiradam in Tamil and Malayalam.
    Power And Motivation
The Vishwa Devas are the deities for this Nakshatra. These ten Vishwadevas are the sons of the God Dharma. The power of the Nakshatra is Apradhrisya Shakti which is the unchallenged victory. But, the motivation is Moksha. This Nakshatra has the ability to have big goals and ambitions as well as the perseverance to pursue them. The weakness is they that when there is no lofty goal, they can become demotivated and lazy. There is a tendency to be over dominating and to start things but not finish them as they crave the constant thrill of new goals.
Uttarashada spans 26 degrees 40 minutes Saggitarius up to 10 degrees Capricorn. Since it is in two Rashis, the Rashi lord for the different Padas are different. The first Pada is in Dhanus/ Saggitarius Rashi as well as the Dhanus Navamsa. The second, third and fourth padas are in the Rashi of Makara/ Capricorn and so the Rashi lord for these padas is Saturn. The Navamsa position for the 2, 3 and 4 Padas are Capricorn, Aquarius and then Pisces respectively. The animal is the male mongoose however, there is no counterpart for this animal among the other Nakshatras.

    Chara Dashas

A very unique tool that Vedic astrology uses to time events in a person’s life is Dashas. There are many systems such as the Vimshottari Dasha, Chara Dasha, Ashtottari Dasha, Yogini Dasha etc that are in use. A Dasha is a time period in which a particular planet or Rashi dominates a person’s life. This also defines the pattern that will be more prominent in that time period. There are many Dasha systems and each astrologer has their own personal preferences as to which of them they use.

It is always advisable to use more than one Dasha system in order to more accurately predict an event or the series of events that are likely to happen in a specific time period. The most commonly used Dasha system is the Vimshottari Dasha system as it is very easy to calculate and is simple to use. It is a planetary Dasha where each time period is ruled by a planet. Other Dasha systems use different rulers of each time period.

    Chara Dasha

The Chara Dasha is a Rashi based Dasha system that is primarily used in the Jaimini system of astrology. As we know that while the Parashari system of astrology primarily uses the planets and Nakshatras, Jaimini astrology is sign based. So, the ruler of a Jaimini Chara Dasha is a Rashi and not a planet. It is not as straightforward to calculate as the Vimshottari Dasha system but is useful as a timing tool. One peculiarity of the Chara Dasha is also that it does not always follow the same sequential order. The length of the time periods is also very unique to every single birth chart.

    Chara Dasha: Rashi Based Timing

In the modern-day when we use software to calculate charts, the calculation method is not always understood by students of astrology. But, if one pays attention to the calculated Chara Dasha it is seen that for some birth charts the Rashi order of the Dasha is forward and for some, it is in the reverse order.

    Odd And Even Quarters

The Rashis are classified into odd and even quarters in Jaimini. This classification helps us to calculate the Chara Dasha sequence. The 12 Rashis are divided into four sets of three Rashis each. The first three Rashis of Aries (Mesha), Taurus (Rishaba) as well as Gemini (Mithuna) are the Odd Rashis. Cancer (Kartaka), Leo (Simha) and Virgo (Kanya) are even while Libra (Tula), Scorpio (Vrischik) and Dhanus (Sagittarius) are odd. Capricorn (Makara), Aquarius (Kumbha) as well as Pisces (Meena) are even.

    Chara Dasha Calculation: Dasha Sequence

    Step 1

The first step to calculate the Chara Dasha order is to determine the Rashi that is in the ninth house. For example, for the Aries Lagna, the ninth house Rashi is the sign of Saggitarius. Similarly for the Leo Lagna, the ninth house is Aries.

    Step 2

Determine if the ninth house is in an odd or even quarter (as described above). If the ninth house is an odd quarter sign the sequence of the Chara Dasha Rashi will be in the forward direction. Similarly, if the ninth house is in an even quarter the sequence of the Dasha will be in the backward order. So, in the Aries Lagna where the ninth house is Saggitarius, the 9th house is in an odd quarter. So, the Dasha sequence is in the forward direction. For the Leo Lagna, the Cancer Lagna the ninth house is Pisces. This is an even quarter and so the Dasha sequence will be backwards. The major Dasha sequence starts with the Rashi itself and then goes backwards or forwards.

Chara Dasha Sequence: Counting Forward Or Backward

The Chara Dasha Sequence For Each Lagna

Aries: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.

Taurus: Taurus, Aries, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, Sagittarius, Scorpio, Libra, Vigro, Leo, Cancer and Gemini.

Gemini: Gemini, Taurus, Aries, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, Sagittarius, Scorpio, Libra, Virgo, and Leo.

Cancer: Cancer, Gemini, Taurus, Aries, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, Sagittarius, Scorpio, Libra, Virgo and Leo.

Leo: Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo and Virgo.

Virgo: Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer and Leo.

Libra: Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo and Virgo.

Scorpio: Scorpio, Libra, Virgo, Leo, Cancer, Gemini, Taurus, Aries, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Sagittarius.

Sagittarius: Sagittarius, Scorpio, Libra, Virgo, Leo, Cancer, Gemini, Taurus, Aries, Pisces, Aquarius and Capricorn.

Capricorn: Capricorn, Sagittarius, Scorpio, Libra, Virgo, Leo, Cancer, Gemini, Taurus, Aries, Pisces and Aquarius.

Aquarius: Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Capricorn.

Pisces: Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Aquarius.

Chara Dasha Is Ruled By Rashis

An easy way to remember this is that the Lagnas of Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Scorpio, Saggitarius and Capricorn will always have the order of the Chara Dasha in reverse.

Chara Dasha Calculation: Chara Dasha Sub Period

Those familiar with the Vimshottari Dasha know that the sub-period of the Mahadasha usually starts with the very same ruler as the Mahadasha and then progresses from there. For example, the first subperiod in a Mars Dasha is a Mars sub-period. But, in the Chara Dasha system, it is not so. The last sub-period is the same as the Rashi of the main Dasha. So an Aries Chara Dasha will have the last sub-period as Aries and not the first.

The direction of the sub-period is calculated in exactly the same way as it is for the major periods. One must however remember that the starting Rashi comes last and not first.

The Chara Dasha Sub Period Sequence For Each Lagna

Aries: Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces and then Aries

Taurus: Aries, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, Sagittarius, Scorpio, Libra, Virgo, Leo, Cancer, Gemini and then Taurus.

Gemini: Taurus, Aries, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, Sagittarius, Scorpio, Libra, Virgo, Leo, Cancer and then Gemini.

Cancer: Gemini, Taurus, Aries, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, Sagittarius, Scorpio, Libra, Virgo, Leo and then Cancer.

Leo: Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer and then Leo.

Virgo: Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo and then Virgo.

Libra: Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo and then Libra.

Scorpio: Libra, Virgo, Leo, Cancer, Gemini, Taurus, Arises, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and then Sagittarius.

Sagittarius: Scorpio, Libra, Virgo, Leo, Cancer, Gemini, Taurus, Aries, Pisces, Aquarius, and then Capricorn.

Aquarius: Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn and then Aquarius.

Pisces: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and then Pisces.

    Chara Dasha Calculation: Dasha Length

The Dasha length is also determined by a method of counting backwards or forwards. We determine whether to count forward or backwards by the same method used previously. The count is from the Rashi till the Rashi lord. While counting when a planet is encountered that is in its own sign the duration is of 12 years. Once the count reaches the lord of the Rashi we subtract one. So, for example, for Cancer Dasha, we count backwards to the placement of the Moon and then subtract 1.

    Chara Dasha Calculation Of Duration

Exceptions to this are the Rashis that have two rulers. Scorpio (Vrischik) is ruled by Mars as well as Ketu. Aquarius is ruled by Rahu as well as Saturn. In these two cases, it must be determined which of the two rulers is stronger. If either Mars or Ketu is in Scorpio it is stronger. Similarly, if either Rahu or Saturn is in Aquarius, it is stronger. If there are more planets with one of the rulers, it is stronger. If both the Rashi rulers are placed together, the one with the higher degree even by a minute is the stronger of the two.

So, in this way the counting is done from the Rashi to the Rashi ruler with 12 years added for own house placement and one is subtracted from the final count. This final number then arrived at is the number of years of the Chara Dasha.

Chara Dasha Calculation: Counting Rules For Chara Dasha Length

Aries: Count Forward to Mars, then subtract 1

Taurus: Forward to Venus, then subtract 1

Gemini: Count forward to Mercury, then subtract 1

Cancer: Count backwards to the Moon, then subtract 1

Leo: Count backwards to the Sun, then subtract 1

Virgo: Count backwards to Mercury, then subtract 1

Libra: Count forward to Venus, then subtract 1

Scorpio: Count forward to Mars (or Ketu), then subtract 1

Sagittarius: Count forward to Jupiter, then subtract 1

Capricorn: Count backwards to Saturn, then subtract 1

Aquarius: Count backwards to Saturn (or Rahu), then subtract 1

Pisces: Count backwards to Jupiter, then subtract 1

    Sub Period Length

The length of the sub-period within a Chara Dasha period is one-twelfth (1/12) of the main period. So, for a major period of 12 years, the sub-period will be 12 months. And so the sub-sub period will be 30 days.

    Arjuna’s Nakshatra – Phalguna

Arjuna is very well known as the ace archer amongst the Pandavas. One of his many names is Phalguna. And this is because of his connection to a Phalguni Nakshatra. It is very interesting to see how the characteristics of this Nakshatra is clearly seen in the life of Arjuna.

    The Names Of Arjuna

We learn of the detailed explanation of the names of Arjuna in the Mahabharata (Virata Parva, section 44). He is in conversation with Uttara who will later be his daughter in law.

    ?????????? ? ?????????? ????????????? ???? ????

    ???? ?????? ????????? ??? ???? ??????? ?????

    uttar?bhya? ca p?rv?bhya? phalgun?bhy?m aham div?

    j?to himavata? pres??ha tena m?m phalguna? vidhu?

This translates as “ I am known as Phalguna because I was born in the snowy season on a day of both Uttaraphalguni and Purvaphalguni.” What this means is that the Moon was in Purvaphaguni and then went to Uttarphalguni on the same day. The Moon passing through the paired Nakshatras on the same day happens sometimes. But, the Moon can pass through two Nakshatras and the next sunrise may be the third Nakshatra. The middle Nakshatra does not get its own day. This is quite rare. And since Arjuna makes special mention of it, it may indeed have been one of those special days that was ruled by both the Uttara and Purvaphalguni Nakshatras which form a pair of Nakshatras called the Phalgunis. So, having been born on a unique day with the Phalguni pair active, Arjuna is called Phalguna.

    Purvaphalguni Nakshatra

Arjuna was born when the Moon was in the Nakshatra of Purvaphalguni. It is the Nakshatra that is owned Ayyaman. Some scholars interchange the rulership of the Phalgunis between Bhaga and Aryaman. This Nakshatra signifies wisdom, good fortune, wealth, leadership, nobility and honour. This does match with the life of Arjuna. He was the middle brother of five brothers yet, he is one of the most well known. The stories of his exploits are still retold. He was also the head of the army when the Ashwamedha Yagna was performed. He stood out and made a name for himself.

The wisdom and good fortune of Arjuna are obvious by the great unparalleled blessing that he had in the support of Lord Krishna. Arjuna also earned many blessings from his elders and from his father Indra.

    Purvaphalguni – Union And Sensuality

The Nakshatra of Purvaphalguni is ruled by Venus. It is strongly associated with unions, marriage and marriage bed. Sometimes it is even said that Purvaphalguni is very sensual and has a tendency to have many relationships. It is the stuff of legend that Arjuna was the one who won the hand of Draupadi in the Swayamvar. He was also married many times and was the Pandava who had the most number of wives.

    Nakshatra Of Friendship

Aryaman and Bhaga are linked with friendship. The deep friendship between Arjuna and Lord Krishna is one of the focal points of the Mahabharata. Arjuna had Lord Vishnu’s Avatar as his friend. He was also Arjuna’s charioteer, guide and confidante. Lord Krishna gave his dear friend the wisdom and knowledge of the Bhagavad Gita that serves all of mankind even today.

    Purvaphalguni – Arts

Purvaphalguni is also linked with the arts. This Nakshatra gives talent in art and creativity. We know that due to the curse of Urvashi Arjun was undercover as a dance teacher for one year. Despite the gender identity, he surely would have had to be a talented dancer to pull off the role. One might also say that martial arts also need fierceness as well as artistry.

    Purvaphalguni – Fierce

This is a Nakshatra that is classified as fierce. Despite the softer side of Arjuna, he was a fearsome warrior. Despite his many misgivings before the battle, he stood up to the demands of the fratricidal war. Notwithstanding the many casualties and lives lost, he was still fierce and strong in battle.

    The Direction Of Purvaphalguni

Purvaphalguni is a Nakshatra that is classified as downward-facing Nakshatra. This links to the incident when Arjuna shoots an overhead fish target simply by looking at its reflection in the water below.

    The Symbol Of The Phalgunis

Purvaphalguni is represented by the former legs of the bed/cot and Purvaphalguni is the rear legs of the bed or cot. Some versions also state that the symbol of the Nakshatras is the hammock. This is not only the place of the marital union but also of sleep and rest. It is well known that Arjuna had conquered the need for sleep. This also gave him the name Gudakesh. The other popular names of Arjuna that he mentions are Partha, Kiriti, Svetavahana, Jishnu, Bhibatsu, Vijaya, Savyasachi as well as Dhananjaya.
