Guru and 9th, 12th house are responsible for religious change. (Rahu also). However as you have mentioned bodh gaya I would like to add that when anyone does pure meditation given by Budh that is “Vipassana” it is not that person changes into budhism it is more of practicality and experience one has through that technique which changes the perception and choice. We may call it as “budhism” or “Hinduism” but the results and karmic connection with the religion and planets ruling that aspect also plays a huge role. I have seen people doing Vipassana and following pure “dhamma” which is as old as Hinduism and infact the same branch of pure knowledge of enlightenment when we research. Hence when it comes to specifically “budhism” that is finding “bodhi” (enlightenment) through pure dhamma is not much of change atleast spiritually. It is just practical and physical aspects which change. I might sound a little vague, but I have experienced it hence can tell that person is still very much a sanatani Dharma palak because the root of original religion is same.
